TIPS & HINTS

Occasionally students need extra help on an assignment or a friendly reminder about what is expected of them. Remember to speak Spanish every day.  It can be fun if you approach it this way.  In the classroom always look at me when I am speaking because the tongue has to be placed close to the teeth to produce some sounds.
  • To pronounce a Spanish "R" say aloud POT 'O BEANS repeatedly.  Do not add "Beans" and say POT 'O repeatedly.  You have just pronounced the Spanish "R".  Congratulations!!
  • The letter "D" is pronounced "th" when it precedes a vowel.  Say ciudad & concentrate on pronouncing the "D" as "th". Notice the pronunciation of the sentence: Estudio en la universidad de Valdosta State University. Notice how the two "d"s are pronounced as "th" "th".
  • Sinalefa is an important part of all spoken languages.  It occurs when a vowel is followed by another vowel, or vowels.  Slowly say the following:  Ana está especialmente elegante hoy. The last "a" in Ana is combined with the "e" in está.  The final "á" in está glides to combine with the "e" in especialmente and the final "e" glides to combine with the "e" in elegante and the final "e" in elegante glides to combine with the o in hoy (the "h" is silent).  This is the process of sinalefa and you need to practice it repeatedly and become conscious of its existence.
  • Learn the rules of accentuation.  The governing rules are extremely important.  They are:
  • 1. Words that end with a vowel are vocally stressed on the next to last syllable.  EXAMPLE:  mañana
  • 2.  Words that end with a consonant are vocally stressed on the last syllable.  EXAMPLE: universidad
  • 3. Exceptions to rules 1 & 2 must have a written accent that is vocally stressed. EXAMPLE:  xico
